My novel, A Mexican Twilight, biographically depicts the exact same plight of
two immigrants of a yesteryear. The life and times of Juan and Edelia Gomez
vividly encompasses three generations of a typical Mexican family who survived
turbulent revolutionary times in Mexico. “Go to America, son, while you’re still
young” said his father to Juanito. And so, a grueling, timeless journey to
America in search of a better life and success, began. Despite daunting
challenges of language, illiteracy, poverty, and incidents of racial
discrimination, their story of unrelenting determination to find peace and
happiness in America, is dramatically told. Together, they followed a ‘beacon of
hope’ that constantly yearned for success and a better life, and never stopped
believing that the dark cloud that constantly hovered over their elusive dreams
would someday render its sweet reward.
Today, that same ‘beacon of hope’ lives in the hearts and minds of many
immigrants who aspire to find a better life – not only in America, but all over
the world. Proof of this is seen in the thousands of Mexican men and women who
courageously cut a trail of woes and hardships when they left their beloved
homeland in search of peace, freedom, and a better life. Juan and Edelia were
two of the lucky ones.
I, Cecil Gomez, a retired Professional Accountant, a World War II veteran and
author of A Mexican Twilight, am a native son of Oklahoma, born in the little
town of Sapulpa, and the 2nd offspring of Juan and Edelia Gomez’s twelve
children. This, my second non-fiction novel, was inspired by the tremendous
acceptance of my first self-published book, “Mama and Papa’s Twelve Children and
the “Y”, a 1996 publication.
